Tongkat Ali herbal medicine has folkloric applications such as treating diarrhea, boils, ulcers, TB, jaundice, and dysentery. It is used in bodybuilding to enhance muscular mass. Tongkat ali, on the other hand, is well renowned for its potential to increase male sexual activity.
Scientific Research on the Health Benefits of Tongkat Ali
Tongkat Ali as a sexual stimulant. Tongkat ali has been found in scientific research to improve sexual traits and performance in rats. Other experimental animal experiments have revealed an increase in sexual activity in adult rats exhibiting excitement, sniffing, and mounting behavior. In another study for Tongkat ali, eurycoma longifolia was observed to enhance sperm count when compared to control and infertile animals. (“Ang, HH; Lee, KL; and Kiyoshi, M”) (2004). “Sexual excitation in sexually apathetic elderly male rats following oral treatment of Eurycoma longifolia Jack.” Journal of fundamental and clinical physiology and pharmacology)
Tongkat ali as an anabolic booster. When the growth and weight of just one muscle in treated and untreated rats of comparable size were evaluated, the anabolic effect of Eurycoma longifolia was verified in the animal model. “The results indicated that 800 mg/kg of E. longifolia Jack butanol, methanol, water, and chloroform fractions substantially enhanced (p0.05) the levator ani muscle (Ang, HH; Cheang, HS) (2001). “The effects of Eurycoma longifolia jack on the laevator ani muscle in uncastrated and testosterone-stimulated castrated intact male rats.” pharmacal research archives)
Muscle Building. Early study indicates that ingesting Eurycoma longifolia orally for 5 weeks can improve muscular growth and strength in healthy males who participate in a rigorous strength training program.
Low testosterone levels. Early study suggests that consuming an extract of Eurycoma longifolia orally for one month may enhance testosterone levels and alleviate associated symptoms in men with low testosterone levels.
Tongkat ali has anti-cancer properties. Taiwanese researchers extracted chemicals from the roots of Eurycoma longifolia that showed “high cytotoxicity” to human lung and breast cancer cell lines.
Another study found that Eurycoma longifolia extract fractions promoted apoptosis in breast cancer cells.
